• Write a 1-page response to the essay. Talk about what you relate to (or don't relate to) in Ta-Nehisi Coates's experience. Talk about your own experiences of trying to get better at doing difficult things.

• Prepare for your seminar discussion. Remember, we'll discuss the following topics:
• What does Alexie's work SAY about love?
• What does Alexie's work SAY about life (experiences, hardship)?

• If you haven't finished your "moments from True Diary" 1-9, do that.
• You can complete moments 10-12 now that you've finished reading the book.

Remember, you're choosing ONE of the texts ("Death by Landscape," Smoke Signals, "Influences" or "Genetics"), identifying a THEME, and then analyzing how the theme is developed by three of these elements (character, point of view, use of time, crucial moment, setting). Spend 15 minutes mapping out some ideas--you don't have to figure it all out yet!
